Joe Colombo

Nothing in my family environment could drive me to one direction or to another.

Nothing in my family environment could drive me to one direction or to another. I have learnt all alone and I have learnt to choose alone. Born in Milan at 30th July 1930, Joe Colombo attended the “Accademia di Belle Arti” in Brera. At the young age of twenty, he devoted himself to painting and to innovative sculpture and he joined the “Nuclear Movement”. In 1954 he entered the Faculty of Architecture and during this time he developed numerous architectural projects. In 1959 he undertook the management of the family company, producing electronic apparatus. For Colombo, this period of his life heralded an age of discovery as the contrast between the prosaic nature of the company and the more artistic arena of architecture gave him a new insight and awareness. It was a period that gave him unprecedented opportunities to work with new plastic materials. He has been the creator of new housing systems that have revolutionized the traditional concepts of houses and furniture. He died prematurely and many of his projects have been realized posthumously.
